Chronology

Street Fighter Alpha 2

Street Fighter III

Street Fighter Alpha 3 was released in arcades on June 29, 1998[1] as the third and final game in the Alpha series. The game was released after Street Fighter III had already launched, and it took some cues from that game.[2] The game would later be re-released on the Playstation, the Dreamcast, the Sega Saturn (only in Japan), the Playstation 2 in the Street Fighter Alpha Anthology, the Gameboy Advance as Street Fighter Alpha 3 Upper, and the PSP as Street Fighter Alpha 3 MAX.

The game featured a significant overhaul of the game mechanics,[3] and introduced ten new characters. It is considered one of the most feature-rich and well-polished games Capcom has ever produced.[4][5] It was a fairly popular entry,[6] but competitive players found its new mechanics overall less engaging than Alpha 2.[7][8]

The Alpha series is unusual in that most competitive players preferred—and thus stuck with—Alpha 2,[7][8] and whenever tournaments feature a Street Fighter Alpha game in a side tournament it's usually Alpha 2. There have been a number of Alpha 3 tournaments over the years, but it has lagged significantly behind its predecessor.

The game is still played online via web servives such as Fightcade, but not to the same extent as Alpha 2.

Game information[edit]

Street Fighter Alpha 3 was released more than two years after Alpha 2. It featured a significant overhaul of the game mechanics, introduced ten new characters, and is largely considered to be one of the most feature-rich and polished fighting games Capcom has ever released.

Story wise, Alpha 3 is largely considered non-canon;[9] later games (including already-existing properties) would reference the events of Alpha 2 over Alpha 3, but some character developments remain.[10]

Gameplay[edit]

Alpha 3 introduces three different playing styles or "-isms" that players pick after character selection. X-ism is the simplest, granting the player a single bar of meter and a single (but powerful) super combo. This ism also enlarges your guard meter, allows some simplified special moves, and increases damage dealt and taken. However, you can not air block or use Alpha Counters. A-ism is the standard play, and is similar to the previous Alpha games. You are given a meter with 3 sections and the more parts you spend on a super, the stronger it will be. Players have access to multiple supers. The final ism, V-ism, forgoes supers entirely and instead gives the player an activatable "Custom Combo" mode. When activated, the meter begins to drain and custom combos can be performed that are otherwise impossible and can deal tons of damage if the player knows what they are doing. However, if the player is hit even once during this mode, the mode will end. In addition, this mode lowers your standard attack damage.[3] High level play uses almost exclusively V-ism with A-ism used rarely.

Many features return from past Alpha games, such as air-blocking and quick getups. Alpha Counters return, now with a simplified command: Forward + P + K. New features include the guard bar, which drains whenever a player blocks. If their guard meter drains completely, they will be stunned and their bar will be crippled for the rest of the match. This bar rewards offensive play and prevents turtling.

The game also takes a few cues from the already released Street Fighter III, such as changing the throw command to P + K and allowing quick getups aside from the roll previously seen in the series.

X-ism is like classic Street Fighter mode, where your characters are sort of Street Fighter II-like in many ways. [...] The A-ism is the new, like, you get an alpha counter, you get 3 supers [...] And V-ism is busted mode, because it is the custom combo mode; everyone becomes kind of godlike in V-ism."
  4. "Street Fighter Alpha 3 - IGN". IGN. 1999-05-08. "In regard to pure single-player replay value, Street Fighter beats nearly every other fighter on the block. It's got replay value to spare."
  5. "ALPHA 3 is actually INSANE | Street Fighter Alpha 3". Maximilian Dood. 2023-05-30. "One of the most content-rich fighting games of all time. [...] It's incredible. It's like some of the highest effort Capcom ever puts into a fighting game. [...] This is the game where they added so many game modes between all the versions of Alpha 3. [...] It has an astronomical amount of single-player content. This is where we get the inspiration for Street Fighter 6 with the World Tour mode."
  6. "Street Fighter Alpha 3 Review - GameSpot". GameSpot. 2002-12-18. "It's not just one of the better fighting games from the last five years--it's also a terrific game to have on the go."
  7. 7.0 7.1 "Street Fighter Retrospective - Part 2 - Following Up a Legend". Thorgi's Arcade. 2023-08-05. "This is another reason why I think a lot of tournaments tend to run Alpha 2 over 3, because I'll admit I do think Alpha 2 feels smoother so just based on that I do enjoy playing Alpha 2 more, but a lot of pros don't play Alpha 3 simply because of how much you can break it with the V-ism."
  8. 8.0 8.1 "ALPHA 3 is actually INSANE | Street Fighter Alpha 3". Maximilian Dood. 2023-05-30. "And even from a competitive standpoint, it sets this like weird ire amongst the community where a lot of people like Alpha 2 more, because there's quite a few corner infinites and stuff in Alpha 3. [...] In Japan, Alpha 3 is huge, but in other places it feels like Alpha 2 kind of keeps a higher element in the community in some ways."
  9. "Street Fighter Retrospective - Part 2 - Following Up a Legend". Thorgi's Arcade. 2023-08-05. "In the previous games, each character's ending was canon--mostly. [...] But here? Yeah, everyone is just racing to stop M. Bison, so the canon is just thrown out the window. Dan Hibiki does not defeat M. Bison and save the world. Heck, in Alpha 1 and Alpha 2, Charlie dies in his ending because that's what happened. In Alpha 3, he lives and defeats M. Bison because, "Why not? None of this is real, it's just here for fun.""
  10. "Street Fighter Retrospective - Part 2 - Following Up a Legend". Thorgi's Arcade. 2023-08-05. "However, even if these endings aren't canon, so much about these exchanges and the character-specific fights would go on to influence the story of the future games. Karin tells R. Mika that she's impressed by her wrestling and wants to sponsor her. Cut to Street Fighter V where R. Mika works for Karin. Zangief meets E. Honda and the two of them become friends, and yes--in the later games, Zangief and E. Honda are actually friends."
